Who is this guy anyway?

NAPSTER IS AS SLOW AS A TURTLE GOING UPHILL!

This article, written over 2 years ago today is still relevant today because even though Napster is all but gone others are trying to follow the Napster business model. These newcomers also use P2P technology. Now that Morpheus and Kaaza have also been fined it is only a matter of time before ALL P2P pirate sites will be shut down.

I have been writing about MP3 piracy for over a year now, so it should be of no surprise to you that I would TRY OUT NAPSTER to see what it is like. Yesterday I downloaded the VERSION 2 BETA 9 and tried it out. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! Does anyone actually sit and wait 2 hours for a 4 meg mp3? AND this was at 2 AM Eastern Time! My website isn't the fastest thing going, but I know that you can download a 5 meg VIDEO from it in 25 minutes (or less) with a 56k modem. IN OTHER WORDS don't expect 56k SPEED from a 56k modem, with NAPSTER. The trouble with NAPSTER is the very thing that is SUPPOSED tomake it great.

P2P (peer to peer) technology keeps track of the IP ADDRESSES of the usersonline at any given time and connects them DIRECTLY? That should be fast right? It almost reminds me of the old BBS days, but wait....I SHOULD HAVE BEEN NAIVE to think that the "napsterite" on the other end was doing nothing else but waiting for MY download. NO, HE WAS DOWNLOADING FOR HIMSELF and there may be others downloading from him as well, while he may be also SURFING, while he may also have a FREE ISP sending him up banner advertisements which would dramatically cut down his BANDWIDTH. In other words, you have no idea of the QUALITY of the connection on the other end. Also I suspect that more is happening in the BACKGROUND with NAPSTER. ARE THEY ARE MORE THAN JUST A MAIN INTERSECTION? (collecting and FILING data of end users perhaps?)

I figured this out because when I tried to surf with IE5 ,while downloading from a REAL WEBSITE, it was slowed right down, and rightfully so! BUT THE SAME happens with NAPSTER , EVEN THOUGH THE DATA from the "napsterite" WAS JUST TRICKLING DOWN. (The "receive" light on my modem hardly went on FOR NAPSTER) You can guess that after 5 minutes of this I shut down IE to let NAPSTER do it's thing. (It needed so much bandwidth?)A WHOLE HOUR LATER I ONLY HAD 50% OF THE FILE SO I WENT TO BED!

MY CONCLUSION is that NAPSTER, in its current configuration, is no threat to the recording industry or the artists.

If anyone is that poor that they are willing to wait 2 hours to download a single song of mine on NAPSTER, YOU CAN HAVE IT!And Celine, Paul and Metallica go back to sleep. You have nothing to worry about with Napster V2B9 !
